Criminal Justice at Ashland University
Ashland University offers both an Associate of Arts and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice. Students can earn an AA degree in around two years, but the university allows them to earn a BA degree in just three years. Ashland recommends that bachelor's students pick a second major or declare minors in multiple fields. They can study criminal justice and related topics and still graduate within just four years.
Criminal justice majors must take courses designed to teach them more about other cultures and help them understand the difficulties of working with others. Gangs and Cults is a class that looks at how gangs and cults operate in the United States and while members agree to follow those leaders. Alcoholism and Sexual Abuse is another required course that focuses on the connections between criminal activities and how drugs and alcohol can change the way people think and behave. The program includes required classes on Juvenile Delinquency and Advanced Criminology and Profiling.
Ashland offers other opportunities for criminal justice majors. More than 60% of the graduates from this program completed a field experience, and more than 40% of students elect to do more than one internship. Students can work with juveniles or adults in cities across the country. The university also allows students to do field experiences in their own hometowns over the summer semester. There is an honors society designed for criminal justice majors too.
Dayton, Ohio is home to the Advanced Technical Intelligence Center. Students enrolled in either Ashland criminal justice program have the chance to complete programs through that center. Those who pass the background check can get their government security clearance, which will help them when they begin applying for jobs. About Ashland University
Ashland University is a private university that has a religious affiliation with The Brethren Church. Located in the Ohio city of the same name, the Ashland campus is close to major cities, including both Cleveland and Columbus. Established in 1878, the university opened just one year after locals agreed to raise the funds needed to build a new college campus in the city. Called Ashland College for several years, it opened for classes in 1879 and saw the number of applications it received grow slowly over the coming years. Though it only had an enrollment rate of 200 students at one point, its enrollment today includes more than 5,700 students.
U.S. News and World Report ranks Ashland within the top 200 of all colleges in the United States. The university also saw its online MBA program ranked as one of the most affordable programs in the country. Forbes included the university within the top 20 of the schools that it ranks as having the best return on their investments. Though more than 70% of its current students come from Ohio, the university welcomes students from any other state and from other countries to apply. Ashland University Accreditation Details
As Ashland University has regional accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS), students can transfer credits from and to the university. This includes students transferring from other schools and those who took college courses at the high school level. NCACS accreditation also allows students to use the FAFSA, which helps them get the financial aid that they need each year they remain in school.
Ashland University Application Requirements
With an acceptance rate of more than 76%, Ashland accepts a large number of students who apply every year. It typically accepts all students who meet its general admissions requirements. Incoming freshmen must score at least 18 on the ACT or 860 on the SAT and have a high school grade point average of 2.5 or higher. The university asks students to submit their transcripts to show that they have a higher GPA. They will also provide official scores from one of the entrance exams. The university does not require a test score from a student who completed high school more than three years ago.
As Ashland reviews each individual application that it receives, it recommends that students apply even if they think they don't meet these requirements. Students may receive a conditional acceptance letter that requires they take introductory courses in their first year and maintain a higher GPA. All students will also use the Ashland online application. It takes most students just 30 minutes or less to complete the application because the university does not ask for references or other forms. Tuition and Financial Aid
Any undergrad who takes 11 or fewer credits in a semester pay the university's part-time tuition rate, which comes out to $940 per credit hour. All other students pay around $10,160 per semester or around $20,300 per year. Room and board will add close to $10,000 to their annual costs. Ashland estimates that full-time students who live on its main campus pay a little more than $31,000 a year. There are other fees for students who want to audit classes and those spending a semester abroad.
Students can complete just a few steps and apply for financial aid. They will start with the FAFSA, which asks for the Ashland code. The university will receive that form, create a financial aid package and then notify the student that the package is available. Students must then go online and log into their accounts. Once they view their aid packages, they will need to accept them before the semester starts.
The financial aid available for undergrads includes many different grants and student loans. Ashland offers its own grants and scholarships that can award individual students with more than $11,000 in aid for a single year.
